Gender identity is an extremely important characteristic for human beings. Assigning it must take place immediately after birth, for the mental health of both children and their parents. Changing sexual identity is among the most significant changes that a human can experience. It should therefore be undertaken with extreme care and caution. By the time most adults come to surgery, they have lived for many years with a dissonant identity. Most individuals who undergo gender reassignment surgery lead happy and productive lives.
In-depth psychological counseling should precede and follow any gender reassignment surgical procedure.
What is involved in the GRS procedure?
(A) An incision is made into the scrotum
(B) The flap of skin is pulled back, and the testes are removed
(C) The skin is stripped from the penis but left attached, and a shorter urethra is cut
(D) All but a stump of the penis is removed
(E) The excess skin is used to create the labia (external genitalia) and neo.vagina.
Patients having the surgery done by an experienced surgeon run into no problems at all, you should, however, take into account that the risks that are associated with any surgical procedure are present in gender reassignment surgery. These include infection, postoperative pain, and dissatisfaction with anticipated results. The most common complication of male to female surgery is narrowing of the new vagina; the chance of this happening can be minimized by dilating responsibly.
Other possible complications include closure of the urethral opening, infection of any of the incisions, and the formation of an abnormal connection between the vagina and the rectum. All these can be dealt surgically if they occur.
Planning
Upon your arrival, we will pick you up from the airport. Following surgery, we recommend that international patients stay at our hospital, Kasemrad Hospital for 10 days. Gender reassignment patients should plan to stay in Bangkok for at least 20 days (We recommend a full 30 days).
The clinic will arrange for hospital/ hotel accommodation, transportation for you for the first 20 days.
Preparations
You are recommended to do a complete genital electrolysis, about 1 to 6 weeks before the surgery; as some post-operative patients have reported that un-removed hair in and around their new vaginas caused aesthetic and functional concerns. (For Penile inversion Vaginoplasty)
Stop smoking for at least 3 weeks before surgery as it seriously affects the recovery from your surgery and is harmful to your health, it should be discouraged and attempt to give it up.
Stop hormones, medication that contain aspirin, Vitamin E, Fish oils and anti-inflammatory drugs for a recommended of at least 3 weeks before surgery.
Pre-operative health screening can be done in Thailand, but you are advised to do so in your country to avoid disappointment; patients must be confirmed to be free from serious diseases. (Individual cases should contact us for more information)
